Rohit Sharma Sees Potential in Shubman Gill




Covid-19 has impacted most of the industries and cricket industry is among them. All the matches including IPL which was supposed to happen in March is not happening. India is on lockdown to avoid spread of Covid-19 disease. During this time staying at home is the only option to stop worsening the situation.

Cricketers are seen live on Instagram live chat during quarantine period. Rohit Sharma is seen having live Instagram chats with his fellow cricketer friends. Recently in his chat with Harbhajan Singh he said, he sees potential in Shubman Gill. Rohit says the youngster should be given more opportunities in the senior team.

The 20-year-old was picked for the New Zealand Tour where he played in 2 ODIs.  He was also selected for India’s Test series against South Africa and for Test series in New Zealand.
In his conversation on live chat Rohit said “I think Shubman is a fluent batsman. He is future of Indian cricket. Whenever he gets a consistent run, he will get confidence. He has a good domestic record. I think we should look to bring him into the side. There is a lot of competition in the side.” Harbhajan also agreed to Rohit and said Gill should get a chance.

Shubman’s Debut

Right hand top order batsman Shubman Gill made his first-class debut for Punjab against Bengal in 2017-18 Ranji Trophy. He made half century in the game and 129 in the next match against services. His international debut to Indian cricket team was in Jan 2019.

His Family Life

He was born in Punjabi family in Fazilka in Punjab. His father Lakhwinder Singh was an agriculturist and he too wanted to be a cricketer but could not fulfill his dream. As per him Shubman had love for cricket since childhood. He used to keep bat and ball with him while sleeping also when he was only 3 years old. Father Lakhwinder Singh has helped him to be a cricketer. Gill used to practice batting on his farm.

Gill is known for his performance for domestic matches Vijay Hazare Trophy 2016-17, Ranji Trophy 2017-18, Deodhar Trophy 2018-19, Duleep Trophy 2019-20. He was also bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 1.8 Crore. In 2019 he also won award for Emerging Player of the tournament in Indian Premier League.

Gill was picked in the Test series against New Zealand in absence of injured Rohit, but he had not got chance to play the match. Prithvi Shaw made a comeback. As per Harbhajan and Rohit both Gill should have been given chance because he was in squad. Seeing his performance Rohit believes he is Future of Indian cricket and should be given more chances.
