Sourav Ganguly’s Journey from Start of Cricket to BCCI President


1989 - Ganguly’s Debut in Bengal Cricket Team

Sourav Ganguly was always inclined towards cricket. His elder brother Snehashish, who was also cricketer introduced him to the cricket world. While Ganguly was studying in 10th std he was enrolled in cricket coaching camp where his talent was acknowledged.
During his under-15 match against Orissa he scored century. He was made captain of St. Xavier School’s cricket team and landed to the Bengal Cricket Team.

1992 – He Made His ODI Debut

Sourav made 3 runs from 13 balls in ODI match against West Indies at Brisbane in 1992. More than his failure his attitude came into focus and he was dropped because of his unprofessional behavior. There were allegations on him that he was rich, spoilt and not a team player but as per Ganguly it was him who was mistreated on his first tour.

1994-95 Impressive Performance in Ranji Series

Ganguly’s continuous impressive performance in Ranji seasons 1993-94 / 1994-95 bought him back in national team on England tour in 1996.

1997 – First ODI Century

Sourav scored his first ODI century with 113 runs against Sri Lanka. He also won 4 consecutive ‘Man of the Match’ award.

1999 – Highest Record by Indian Batsman In ODI World Cup

He created a record of 183 in World Cup match between India and Sri Lanka.

2000 – Dada Became Indian Captain

He has taken the captaincy during tumultuous time. During that period Sachin has resigned from his captaincy and India needed someone who could come in and take control. Sourav came in with his vision. He also bought in young new cricketers. Harbhajan Singh, Virendra Sehwag, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan and Mohammad Kaif were the youngsters playing under Dada’s captaincy.

2004 – Ganguly was honored with Padma Shri title

He was awarded for his major contribution towards cricket by Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, great aerospace scientist and president of India from 2002 to 2007.

2005 – Ganguly’s Captaincy Ended

There were issues between Sourav and coach Grep Chappell during tour of Zimbabwe in 2005 which resulted in Sourav’s end of captaincy.

2008 – Dada Made His International Comeback

He played under leadership of Rahul Dravid and MS Dhoni after his comeback.

2015 – Appointed as The President of the Cricket Association of Bengal

After his retirement he started as president of CAB which is responsible for organizing various cricket tournaments in the state.

2019 – Dada Was Elected as The BCCI President

Dada suggested being BCCI president his biggest focus would be first-class cricket.

“I have been very vocal about looking after the first-class players, especially the time they invest. First-class cricket is the base, the strength. I have written so many times in the last few years that the remunerations need to increase and increase manifold. So that’s going to be a priority.”
